1. Machines vs. Free Weights

Most of us accept that we use both machines and free weights in our
workouts, hopefully getting the best benefits from combining the two.
Also most of us work out for at least 4-5 times a week which we think
will bring the best results.
However, some of us who have been working out for a while can remember
Arthur Jones and the Nautilus machine and how he was set to
revolutionize working out. This was mostly in the seventies which was
an exciting time of bodybuilding, when we were still looking in a
mainstream way about what was and was not possible without performance
enhancing drugs (there is still research in this area but it is not very
high profile in mainstream bodybuilding).
This is a great article
<http://www.davedraper.com/arthur-jones-and-casey-viator-by-wedan.html>
walking through the author's experience training with Jones and the
great Casey Viator who had was one of the all time greats and who
supposedly did workout briefly 3x a week on the Nautilus machines and
was still in amazing shape. Mike Mentzer eventually became another
disciple of Jones.
It's all fascinating stuff. More on on Jone here
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Jones_(inventor)> .
Also an idea for those of us who have gone stale with their usual
routines. Maybe trying one of these approaches will recharge you---or
not.
Bodybuilding is part experimentation and what works for one person does
not always work for all of us.
